Demographics data come from a number of sources. The United States Census Bureau is a significant source of demographic data, and data are gathered from:
- Decennial Census conducted for the United States in the year 2000 (Census 2000)
- Intercensal population estimates (Population Estimates)
- Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE)
- Current Population Survey (CPS)
- American Community Survey (ACS)
Decennial census data for the U.S. Island Areas (American Samoa, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) for the year 2000 come from the territory-specific Census 2000 summary files.
Census data for the freely associated states (Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau) come from their respective censuses:
- Federated States of Micronesia 2000 Census
- Republic of the Marshall Islands 1999 Census
- Republic of Palau 2000 Census
Additional demographic information is available for the following:
American Samoa Federated States of Micronesia Guam Marshall Islands Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands Republic of Palau U.S. Virgin Islands
With the exclusion of the U.S. Virgin Islands, life expectancy data that are presented for the U.S. Island Areas and freely associated states come from the demography/population program of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community as noted in the detailed demographic information.
In addition to data from the Census Bureau and the censuses of the freely associated states, demographics data also come from the following sources:
- National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
- U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)
- U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA)
- Publication in an online medical journal (Publication)
The tables below provide details as to the sources of demographic information used in the system. The table that follows displays the data source(s) for the various categories of demographic indicators:

Census Sources
Census 2000
Data regarding the demographic makeup of the female and minority populations were available at the county level and presented few limitations in consistency and availability. Note that persons of Hispanic (or Hispanic/Latino) origin may be of any race. Total population is equal to the sum of White, Black/African American, American Indian and Alaskan Native and Asian/Pacific Islander with the exception of Census 2000 data and 2001-2007 Census population estimates. For Census 2000 data and 2001-2007 Census population estimates, total population is the sum of White, Black/African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, Other single race, and Two or more races. Also note that Census revised race definitions effective with the 2000 Census to provide additional race specificity and to permit reporting more than one race; as such, there will be some definitional differences when comparing earlier Census estimates with the 2000 Census figures. Additional information and details regarding the Census data can be found at http://www.census.gov

NCHS
2000-2009 Bridge Populations are from the NCHS Bridged-race populations. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), in collaboration with the US Bureau of the Census initially created the Bridged-race population estimates for April 1, 2000. The estimates are the result of bridging the 31 race categories from Census 2000 to the four race categories used by many data systems, including vital statistics. The Census race categories are those specified by the 1997 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) directive on the standards for race and ethnicity data collection whereas the four race categories are based on the 1977 version of the race and ethnicity data collection standards. In all cases, Hispanic is considered an ethnicity and is therefore independent of race data. Bridge population figures are those used to calculate the health status indicators within the system because the state and national data reporting systems do not currently collect data for multiracial categories.
Rates calculated for year 2000 data used the April 1, 2000 Bridge-race population estimates. Rates calculated using data for 2001, 2002 and 2003 years used the NCHS Vintage 2003 Bridged-race population estimates, based on July 1 population estimates. Rates calculated for year 2004 use the NCHS Vintage 2004 Bridged-race population estimates, based on July 1 population estimates. Rates calculated for year 2005 and 2006 use the NCHS Vintage 2006 Bridged-race population estimates, based on July 1 population estimates. Rates calculated for year 2007 use the NCHS Vintage 2007 Bridged-race population estimates, based on July 1 population estimates. Rates calculated for year 2008 use the NCHS Vintage 2008 Bridged-race population estimates, based on July 1 population estimates. Rates calculated for year 2009 use the NCHS Vintage 2009 Bridged-race population estimates, based on July 1 population estimates. NCHS notes that although efforts were made to use the best available data and methods to produce the bridged estimates, the modeling process introduces error into the estimates. The potential for error will be greatest for the smallest population groups, particularly the smaller race groups and county level estimates. More information on the bridge populations can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/about/major/dvs/popbridge/popbridge.htm.

Life expectancies for the 5 Boroughs of New York City were calculated as a single entity because borough-specific mortality estimates were not available for the entire period. Due to multiple changes in county/census divisions, life expectancy for Alaska has been estimated as a single entity, assigned to all counties in the State.
A substantial number of counties, but not all counties, were grouped with one or more other counties in the same state and their data "merged" in order to estimate life expectancy. Note: The resulting life expectancy estimate for each such group of counties is displayed as the same value for each of the component counties.
